Entry requirements for Azerbaijan
You must have an e-visa, which you should apply for at least 3 days in advance from the ASAN Visa service.
Your passport must have at least 6 months validity remaining after your arrival date and at least 2 blank pages for entry stamps.
Your e-visa allows a 30-day stay and you can extend it by applying to the State Migration Service at least 3 days before your permitted stay ends.
If you stay longer than 15 days, you must register with the State Migration Service online or in person.
You must print your e-visa and bring it with your passport to show on arrival.
Good to know:
You cannot export carpets, samovars, copperware or paintings without an export certificate from your vendor or the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum.
To use a local SIM card for more than 30 days, you must register it and pay a fee at a local post office, otherwise your device could be locked.
Safety in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Always carry your passport with you as police often check identity documents.
Be alert to bag-snatching or mugging, especially after dark in central Baku or if you are carrying valuables.
Smoking is restricted to designated areas and you can be fined for dropping cigarette-related litter.
Possession or use of illegal drugs, including cannabis, carries severe penalties including long jail sentences and heavy fines.
If you plan to drive, ensure you have the correct international driving permit and do not use a right-hand-drive car, as it is illegal.

If you have to hire a taxi, agree on the fare upfront or ensure the meter is running to avoid severe overcharging.
Avoid driving at night as many roads are of poor quality, badly lit, and have unmarked closures or diversions.

Health in Azerbaijan
As a British tourist, ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, including repatriation, before travelling to Azerbaijan. While a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) might be useful in some European countries, they are not applicable in Azerbaijan. Check your policy details carefully and ensure it covers all planned activities.

Consult your doctor well in advance of your trip to discuss necessary vaccinations and health precautions. Ensure you have adequate travel insurance. Drink bottled water to avoid stomach issues. Be aware of the risk of tick-borne encephalitis in forested areas.

Local Laws
Most restaurants, cafés, shops and other services in Azerbaijan continue to operate during Ramadan.
The list of specific prohibited activities during Ramadan (eating/drinking/smoking/chewing gum in public, loud music, dancing, swearing) has been removed.
During Ramadan, you must not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum in public in the daytime, including in your car.
During Ramadan, you must not play loud music, dance, or swear in public.
