Entry requirements for India
You must have a visa to visit India unless you hold a valid Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.
To enter India, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date and have at least 2 blank pages.
Foreign nationals arriving in India must complete an e-arrival card online up to 72 hours before reaching immigration.
You must complete a mandatory Self-Declaration Form for all international passengers arriving in India up to 24 hours before arrival.
It is illegal to overstay your visa in India, so ensure you leave before it expires or obtain an official extension.
Good to know:
Hotels and other accommodation must register foreign guests, and you need your passport with a valid visa to get accommodation.
You must declare any amount above 5,000 US dollars in cash or 10,000 US dollars in cash and travellers cheques combined when entering India.
Safety in India
India is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Be vigilant in tourist areas as scammers, pickpockets and ticket touts target foreign nationals.
Avoid accepting drinks or food from strangers due to risks of drink spiking and methanol poisoning.
Keep copies of your passport and valuables secure as theft from buses, trains and in crowds is common.
Be cautious near beaches and isolated areas as there is a risk of sexual assault, especially for women travelling alone.
Drinking alcohol in public places is illegal and some states have a complete ban, with severe penalties including long prison sentences.

Vapes and related products are banned, so you cannot buy them in India or bring them into the country.
Many beaches have strong currents and lack warning signs or lifeguards, so take local advice before swimming.

Health in India

Entry Requirements
Electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) cards were launched in June 2026 and holders need not carry a physical copy of the card.
More information on e-OCI is now available at Online OCI Services, replacing the previous reference to the High Commission and Bureau of Immigration.
All international passengers arriving in India must now complete a mandatory Self-Declaration Form up to 24 hours before arrival through the Air Suvidha Portal.
