Entry requirements for Indonesia
You can get a 30-day tourist visa on arrival for 500,000 Indonesian rupiah, which requires a passport valid for at least 6 months and a return or onward ticket.
Your passport must have at least 2 blank pages and be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date to enter Indonesia.
The 30-day visa on arrival can be extended once for another 30 days, but you must apply for the extension before the initial visa expires to avoid a fine.
You must complete the free online customs and health declaration via the official All Indonesia arrival card website or app within 72 hours before arrival.
You can also apply for a visa online at least a week before travel, with options for a multiple-entry or 60-day visa, but ensure it is approved before you arrive.
Good to know:
If you stay in private accommodation, you must register with the local police to avoid a fine.
All foreign tourists arriving in Bali must pay a 150,000 rupiah tourist levy, which can be paid online or on arrival.
Safety in Indonesia
Indonesia is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Be aware of a high risk of drink spiking linked to sexual assault, particularly in Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands.
Methanol poisoning from counterfeit alcoholic drinks has caused deaths and serious illness, even in licensed bars in tourist areas.
Bag-snatching and pickpocketing are common in busy tourist areas, especially in Bali.
Cannabis and all cannabis-based products, including oils, creams, CBD, and edibles, are illegal and carry severe penalties.
Only use licensed taxi companies or verified ride-hailing apps, and share your journey details with a friend.
Always carry your passport or stay permit with you at all times.

Agree on all fees in advance at tattoo parlours, nail salons and spas, as scams have increased.
During the rainy season (October to March), flash floods and landslides can cause severe disruption and danger, especially in Bali and Jakarta.

Tipping in Indonesia
Tipping is not as widespread or expected in Indonesia as it is in some Western countries, but it is becoming more common, especially in tourist areas and for good service.
Restaurant
5-10% for good service, or round up the bill. Some restaurants may already include a service charge (usually 10%) on the bill, so check before tipping.

Round up the bill or leave a small tip (e.g., IDR 5,000 - 10,000) for good service.
Taxi
Round up the fare to the nearest IDR 5,000 or 10,000. For longer rides or excellent service, you can add a bit more.
