You must apply for a visa to enter Malawi.

You can obtain a single-entry or multiple-entry visa on arrival, payable in US dollars cash.

Online e-visas are also available through the Malawi Immigration website.

Safety in Malawi

Malawi is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Do not walk in quiet areas, especially after dark, due to the risk of mugging and bag-snatching.

Never accept food or drink from strangers as there have been incidents of robbery following consumption of drugged items.

Be aware of an increase in serious illness from alcoholic drinks containing methanol, which cannot be identified by taste or smell.

Review your hotel security as there is a risk of violent break-ins and armed gangs have assaulted tourists in their rooms.

Police may ask for identification, so always carry a copy of your passport, visa, or residence permit.

Bonus tips:

Climb Mulanje Mountain only after getting security advice from the Mountain Club of Malawi.

During the rainy season, always check your route before travelling as floods can make areas inaccessible.
