Entry requirements for Puerto Rico
You must obtain a valid US visa or an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) before travel.
Your passport must be valid for the length of your planned stay in the US.
You cannot apply for an ESTA if you have travelled to countries like Cuba after January 2021, or to Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen since March 2011.
You cannot apply for an ESTA if you have a criminal record, have been arrested, refused US admission, deported from the US, or previously overstayed under an ESTA.
Children aged 17 and under must have a valid visa or ESTA and be able to provide evidence about their visit's purpose, location, and length if asked.
Good to know:
If travelling with a child aged 17 or under who is not with both parents, you should carry a notarised letter of consent, preferably in English.
If you wish to use expedited airport clearance, you can apply for the Global Entry program if you pass a UK background check.
Safety in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Always carry your passport as proof of permission to enter or remain in the US.
Do not leave passports or valuables in rental cars as tourist vehicles are targeted.
Be mindful of your surroundings in unfamiliar areas and avoid walking alone at night.
The legal drinking age is 21 across the entire country.
Possession or use of illegal drugs, including cannabis, can result in long prison sentences and heavy fines.
